From the village of Platanias lying 10km. West of Chania on the island of Crete the route to Therissos takes in the pretty village of Pervolia and the surrounding orange and olive groves set against the stunning backdrop of the "White Mountains" Through the winding Therisso gorge with it's towering cliffs and wild goats you reach the village of Therissos.
The revolution of Crete and it's reunion with Greece, was started here by Eleftherios Venizelos in the 1896 uprising against the Turks, thereby liberating Crete and installing it's own currency and flag before eventually joining the rest of Greece.
This painting depicts the journey and the landscape featuring the fields in the hot summer sun.
