"Greek shoreline"

The shoreline at St. Thomas beach in Pefkos on the island of                                                                               Rhodes is the inspiration for this latest work.

"First there is a mountain"..........

"First there is a mountain, then there is no mountain,
then there is " -  Donovan

The influence in landscape painting of a feature that comes to
dominate an artist's work and which he or she returns to often,
is the presence of a mountain.

The obvious candidate here is Paul Cezanne and his numerous
works featuring Mte. St. Victoire in the Aix En Provence region
of France. But two other painters that I admire also return to the
hills and mountain motif, depicting it in both figurative and
                          abstract ways.

The American artist Georgia O'Keeffe (1887- 1986) moved to
New Mexico in the 1940's and purchased "Ghost Ranch House".
The house and land afforded spectacular views of a barren
landscape and the magnificent " Cerro Pedernal" a flat- topped
mountain that featured in many of her paintings.

Likewise, the Lebanese/American painter, poet and essayist
Etel Adnan (b. 1925) has lived in various countries around the
world and in 1977 moved to live and work in California. There
she was greatly influenced by Mount Tamalpais, which she drew
and wrote about and frequently painted in it's abstract form.

In my own work I have often depicted the hills and mountains
of Greece, the dormant volcanoes of the Timanfaya national
park and more recently the Alpes Maritime region, bordering
                          Nice on the French Riviera.

"Return to Crete"

This week should have been a Spring break that I had booked to
return to Chania on the Greek island of Crete. However due to the
coronavirus  pandemic this trip and all foreign travel for the immediate
                      future has been cancelled.

Looking back at the drawings and notes that I made two years ago, I
thought I'd like to revisit the area in Western Crete known as the
                      "White Mountains".

Although snow - capped in the winter months, the geology of this area
makes the mountains appear white, even in the summer.

My trip there and the stop at the small town of Therissoss was an area
that reminded me of the limesone gorges here in the West of England.

Antibes / Nice & Monaco

A recent trip to the South of France to visit Nice, Monaco and Antibes.
I filled my usual small notebook to make rapid drawings to capture the
                      essence of the riviera.

44AD 2020 Associates Exhibition

I'm showing work in this, the 2020 Associates exhibition at
44 AD gallery in Bath England.

The brief is "Material World" , which for a landscape painter is
not the easiest task ! However I came across this anonymous quote
that would seem to be appropriate :-

"After a visit to the countryside or the beach , it's hard to
believe that we live in a material world".

Everyone welcome on the evening of the 9th. of January for the private view
or throughout the exhibition.
